We’re a week away from Feminist Coming Out Day!
We’ll continue to showcase the faces and voices of feminism on this site as we count down to Feminist Coming Out Day. Some of our featured submissions come from seasoned academics and activists; others come from new allies. We do not expect consensus, nor do we believe feminism to be a monolith. Our goal is to represent the full spectrum of thought while also giving a platform to those identities that have historically not been included in mainstream feminism. In coming weeks, our contributors tackle important questions, such as:

Why is gender equality important?
What was your feminist awakening?
Do you feel represented by the mainstream feminist movement?
What are the issues that matter to you most?
How do you define feminism?
How do you define yourself?
Interested in participating? Submit your “portrait” (in the form of text, images, music, or video) for inclusion in our Feminist Portrait Project. Cross-link to your feminist blog, promote your social justice project, and give us your mini-manifesto. We want to demonstrate that the feminism of today is intersectional and about far more than women’s rights.

Other ways to help our campaign:

Make a pledge on our donation page. Limited-edition “This Is What A Feminist Looks Like” tees will be sent to $20+ contributors. Proceeds support our partner Bitch Magazine.
Set up a Feminist Portrait Project on your campus. We can help with publicity and logistics, provide discounted merchandise, and feature your group’s “portraits” on our website. Contact feministcomingoutday@gmail.com for more information and check out our campus partners page for participating schools!
Follow us on Twitter, like us on Facebook, or add our widget to your blog. You can also make the above poster your profile photo for social networking sites.

Here’s a very exciting development that I wanted to share with all our supporters: IndieGoGo (our fundraising platform) has just featured our campaign on their front page! And it’s all because of your efforts to share our project with fellow feminist friends, colleagues, and family members. Thanks guys!

Feminist Coming Out Day is super stoked to be among the thousands who are attending Walk For Choice and the Planned Parenthood of New York’s Rally For Women’s Health tomorrow in Foley Square. Find us in the crowd by looking for our “This Is What A Feminist Looks Like” tees, which you can get for FREE, in exchange for helping out. (Here’s a photo of FCOD co-organizer, Abby Sun, wearing her t-shirt. Abby will be at the Boston Walk For Choice march while Lena heads up the New York volunteers.)

Want to volunteer? We are assembling a ragtag street team to help us:

There are two shifts (both in Foley Square in Lower Manhattan) which we need volunteers for:

  • 11am-1pm: Walk For Choice, which starts in Foley Square at 11am and goes in loop uptown and ending back at Foley Square at 1pm
  • 1-3pm: Rally For Women’s Health, which takes place at Foley Square

We especially need volunteers for the first shift! If you are interested in helping out, please email lena [at] lenachen.com and let us know when you are available and if you have a smart phone. We are setting up teams of 2-3 people and sending out instructions tonight for a meeting spot (a 10-minute walk from Foley Square) where we will don t-shirts and leave for the event(s) together. Feel free to form a group with your friends and email us with your contact information!

Get yours today with a $20 donation to our campaign with Bitch Magazine. We’ll also be selling these tomorrow at the New York City and Boston Walk For Choice marches!

Get Your "This Is What A Feminist Looks Like" Tees & Fund Feminist Media!

Exciting announcement! The donation page for Feminist Coming Out Day has gone live. Whether you can donate $2 or $300, every donation level comes with a perk (get a limited-edition “This Is What A Feminist Looks Like” tee at $20) and every dollar of campaign profits goes to our charitable partner, Bitch Media, the non-profit organization that publishes Bitch Magazine.

Student groups, organizations, and private individuals that contribute to our highest brackets will also be acknowledged on the Bitch site and receive gift subscriptions signed by the magazine’s executive director. Here’s a prototype (from last year’s Harvard event) of the custom shirt designed for our March 8th event:

(It also comes with a sticker and that nifty button, sans the “Harvard” mention.)

We only did a run of 1,000 with limited sizing, so get them while they’re hot! You can reserve yours by pledging a donation on the above site and emailing feministcomingoutday@gmail.com with your desired size. A full sizing guide is available on the donation page. (Please place orders by February 20th if you are planning to wear it for Feminist Coming Out Day.)
